Thought I'd take 2 of my kids to see 'The Phoenician Scheme' last weekend. Looked at the show times for Sunday, there were four screenings. First screening was at 1215, thought that one wouldn't be busy. I was right, there was almost nobody there. Bought 3 tickets. Almost 90$! It was for a 'VIP' screening. I didn't know what that was, but I don't go often and I like Wes Anderson so what the hell? I was excited. They asked my kids for ID going in. You needed to be 19 to attend the 'VIP screening'. They didn't bring ID. Didn't matter since one wasn't 19 yet. Because of some alcohol laws, I couldn't watch a PG-13 movie with my 20 year old and my 17 year old. Even though none of us were going to order any food or beverages, it didn't matter. I was offered a choice between choosing another movie or having my money refunded. Seems weird.. I could take my kids to 'White Spot' when they were little and order a drink while sitting at the same table. Apparently, so many people need to booze it up while watching a Wes Anderson movie AT NOON that they need their own screening. I got my money back. I'll be damned if I ever go back there. Here in BC Canada we've legalized hard drugs.. but we need to protect a 17 and 20 year old from watching a movie in a theater where other people might be drinking a beer. What a joke Canada is. |

Restaurants don't lose their licenses when they serve alcohol to parents who are eating with young children. Who needs to booze it up at noon watching a PG-13 movie? Are you really going to see the 'Live action remake' of that Dragon movie? It's all bullshit. The dragon is still CGI, they don't even use a real one. |

Would a restaurant be fined or lose its license if an adult shares a beer with a 16-year old sitting at the same table? |

They can't stop me from giving booze to my kids if I want. I could pour some booze in their drinks from a flask at any screening, or guzzle some beers with them in the car before we went in. Not sure who they imagine they're protecting. The theater was practically empty. Instead of making 90$ they lost a customer. It's stupid. |

They are protecting themselves from the possibility of being penalized because an adult customer shared an alcoholic drink with a minor during the two hours in the dark when nobody is monitoring. I am pretty sure there are many bars that don't allow minors even if they swear up and down that they are only going to listen to the music and drink a coke. |

We’re allowed to drink in any movie no matter the age of those around you so long as the movie theater allows the sale of booze. Btw, I have zero interest in Anderson’s new film. It looks the same as all the others. |

If they must have screenings for adults only and serve booze.. maybe don't do it at noon on a weekend for a PG-13 movie? Even when I was at my most prolific levels of alcohol consumption I could go a couple of hours without drinking when I went to a movie. Real true boozers will bring their own alcohol to ANY screening no matter what time it is. They're not frisking people. |

Only inside the VIP section alcohol is served. Everyone who goes to any of the VIP theatres has to show ID if they look like they could be underage, regardless of the movie and regardless of the time. In the theatres outside the VIP section, there is no need for any monitoring because you can't get alcohol in the first place. If the theatre you went to doesn't have the same configuration (different sections for VIP theatres where you can buy a burger and a beer, and regular theatres where you can only buy popcorn, nachos, hot dogs and a Coke), then yes, requesting ID for a PG-13 movie at noon is a bit silly. |
